14-19 Agenda

The 14-19 Agenda is the national drive to engage all young people in learning through varied and flexible routes through school and into post-16 education and training.

14-19 Diploma Overview

The 14-19 Diplomas are a new set of qualifications that can be taken at school or college as an alternative to traditional GCSE or A level routes.

Launched in September 2008, 14-19 diplomas offer students a mix of classroom learning, creative thinking and hands-on experience and appeals to diverse interests and styles of learning. For those that have taken part, the qualification has opened many new career and higher educations options that were previously unobtainable.

Indeed, the 14-19 Diplomas offer a range of courses that have previously never been open to students. The qualifications help to develop key skills and experiences that are valued by employers and which universities and colleges look for in potential students.

There are currently 10 courses available, from Environmental and Land-Based Studies through to Manufacturing and Product Design and, by 2011, a further seven courses will available.

There are three levels to the 14-19 qualification.

  • The Foundation Diploma: Available from Year 10 and above, the foundation diploma is the equivalent to 5 GCSE’s, grades D-G
  • The Higher Diploma: Available from Year 10 and above, the higher diploma is the equivalent of 7 GCSE’s, grades A*-C
  • The Advanced Diploma: The equivalent to three and a half A levels and can be started in Year 12 or above (nb - The Advanced Diploma could lead to college, university or to skilled employment)
